How did Shay Mitchell meet Matte Babel?

Babel was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, just like his baby mama Shay Mitchell. In an interview with Fox News in 2017, Mitchell talked about how she and Babel started off as friends in Toronto. “We’ve known each other for nine years. We knew each other in Toronto. Like Drake and all of them, it’s a Toronto crew.”

The pair were first linked in January 2017 while Babel was still working as a reporter for Entertainment Tonight Canada. A source told ET at the time that Mitchell and Babel had been together “for a few months”, before adding they “are serious and are having fun together.”

Born on October 13, 1980, the Toronto native attended Wilfrid Laurier University from 1999 to 2003, where he double majored in communications and sociology. He then worked as a host for Canadian cable channel MuchMusic and as a co-host on CP24 Breakfast before he became a correspondent for ET Canada, per IMDb.

According to Elle magazine, the 43-year-old has worked as a consultant for brands, and currently serves as chief brand officer of DreamCrew, the management and entertainment group overseeing his long-time friend Drake’s career and business portfolio. Babel also oversees Nocta, Drake’s sub-label for Nike.

Babel has dabbled in TV and film before too. In 2010, he appeared on Canadian teenage drama Degrassi: The Next Generation alongside Mitchell and Drake.

The former TV host was on the set of Drake’s music video, “Laugh Now Cry Later” featuring Lil Durk, and posted behind-the-scenes footage from the recording on Instagram. Aside from working together, Babel also attended Drake’s 33rd birthday with Mitchell, just days after she gave birth to their first daughter.

Per People, a year after Mitchell suffered a miscarriage in 2018, the couple welcomed daughter Atlas Noa in October 2019. Mitchell’s YouTube series Almost Ready showed Babel being there for her every step of the way ahead of Atlas’ arrival.

Mitchell said in the first episode: “He is so good with kids. He is just so comfortable. After the pregnancy, I don’t have a worry at all.”

Almost three years later, they welcomed their second daughter, Rome, who was reportedly named after Mitchell’s grandma who died around the time she announced her pregnancy.

The You star shared with E! News that she appreciates having Babel as her partner in parenting: “It’s definitely a partnership. Finding somebody who has similar morals to you is extremely important.”

In 2023, Mitchell said to Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper that she didn’t need a “piece of paper and a big celebration and a ring” to prove her love for Babel.

And the pair work so well together, she’s clearly right. Babel is also on the board of Mitchell’s travel and lifestyle brand Béis and tequila seltzer brand Onda, and even travelled to China with her to help source materials for her bags, as seen in a video on her YouTube channel, How I Started My Brand.

In fact they do almost everything together, it seems. Last year the duo played as a team at a pickleball tournament hosted by Béis too.
